Who can apply

You apply as the primary caregiver, the person who takes daily responsibility for the child. You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee, living in the country with the child, and the child must be under 18. You may claim for a maximum of six non-biological children.

The means test

SASSA applies an income threshold that is updated each year. Single caregivers are assessed on their own income; married caregivers on their combined income. Check the current threshold on the SASSA website or at your local office before assuming you earn too much, the limit is higher than most people expect.
